Marina Baskakova, is working on an individual research project, "Gender Aspects of Investments into Human Capital" funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The author proceeds from the hypothesis that real benefit from higher education differ significantly between men and women. The benefits yielded by education are formed in the sphere of employment, which is marked by discrimination on the basis of gender and by the attitude that women comprise a second-grade work force. As a result, the positions of men and women are not equal; according to different estimates the average wage of women in Russia vary from 70% to 52% of that of men. Also, the period of paid employment is shorter for women than for men because practically all social benefits intended for all employees with family obligations are used mostly by women. This gives grounds for concluding that women find it much more difficult to recoup their educational expenses. The study is conducted on the basis of the analysis of government statistics and statistical analysis of sociological surveys, as well as with the help of mathematical modeling.
