MODULE I.
THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL BASES OF GENDER STUDIES

Control over teaching results: Those passing the course should take active part in collective research, work individually, and timely produce an essay.

Module objectives:

  • to acquiant the audience with principal notions, approaches, and orientations of the modern gender theory;

  • to display opportunities of applying the gender theory and methodology in social and humane studies;

  • to train the audience to apply the gender theory for working out their own courses in the field of social and humane disciplines;

  • to analyze the evolution of gender studies in Russia.

Main Module Topics

Part 1. Social and Intellectual Prerequisites for the Emergence of Gender Studies as a New Type of Humane Knowledge

Topic 1. Traditional philosophical, sociological, and psychological theories of sex. The notions of "masculinity" and "femininity" in traditional philosophic conceptions. Formation of "normal femininity" in the S.Freud's psychoanalysis. T.Parsons' theory of instrumental and expressive roles. Socio-biology (L.Tyger & R.Fox, Wilson, Geodakian). The psychological conception of E.Ericson.

Topic 2. Feminism: core ideas, directions and theories. Social and intellectual prerequisites of feminism. Conceptions of liberal, marxist, socialist, radical, psychoanalytic, existentialist, and post-modernist feminisms. Feminist criticism of the traditional science. The spread of feminist theory into universities and emergence of the "women's studies" phenomenon.

Part 2. Bases of Gender Theory and Methodology.

Topic 1. Universalism and relativism of culture in constructing the gender system. Patriarchy and matriarchy theories. Practice of division of labour within the context of different cultures. Cultural variety problem.

Topic 2. Core concepts of the gender theory.
Differentiation between the "sex" and "gender" concepts. Gender in socio-demographic studies. Theory of social construction of gender. Gender as a stratification category. Gender as a cultural metaphor.

Topic 3. Gender approach in sociology, political sciences, philosophy, and social practice.

Topic 4. Evolution of gender studies in Russia: chief centres, subjects of studies and curriculums.

MODULE II. THEORETICAL APPROACHES IN GENDER ECONOMICS

Control over teaching results: Those passing the course shall take active part in collective research, work individually with their tutors, and introduce in proper time an essay.

Module objectives:

  • to provide for the audience knowledge of principal theoretical approaches to the analysis of women's standing in economy; promote the audience to work out independent blocks or separate themes pertinent to the gender analysis of economic policy;

  • to discuss with the audience principal theoretical and methodological approaches elaborated by the current moment within the framework of the feminist economic theory and prepare them to produce independent blocks in the context of the theme proposed.

Main Module Topics

Topic 1. Marxist approach to economic unequality of women. Marxism and neo-Marxism. Feminist criticism of the Marxist approach. Modern theoretical approaches (Christine Delphy, Heidi Hartmann, R.Barron, and G.Norris).

Topic 2. Gender in neoclassical theory. Principals of the neoclassical approach. Feminist criticism of fundamentals of the neoclassical theory. Modern theoretical approaches, i.a. family and household as objects for the economic analysis; marriage decision-making and marital stability; reproductive behaviour.

Topic 3. Intra-family distribution of income (family concensus model of P.Samuelson, altruistic model of G.Becker). Productive function of household (G.Becker's "new economics of the household"). Division of labour within the family ("human capital" theory of T.Schulz, G.Becker).

Topic 4. Women in the labour market. Sex discrimination in the field of employment as the central notion in the economic dimension of gender unequality. Theories of discrimination by sex in the labour market. Professional segregation by sex.

Topic 5. Institutionalism and feminism. Fundamental theoretical approaches. Torstein Veblen's "Theory of the idle class". Negotiation models of family. Marriage and divorce decision-making within negotiation family model (R.Pollack, L.Weitzman).

Topic 6. The subject and tasks of the feminist economic theory. Grounding for the equality policy for men and women in the economic area.

MODULE III. GENDER APPROACH IN POLITICS AND LAW STUDIES

Module objectives:

  • to display how conventional Western political science evolved and analyze feministic criticism of this science;

  • to acquaint the audience with opportunities proposed by the application of gender approach for analyzing of political developments;

  • to examine main orientations and themes of gender studies in the field of Western and Russian politics;

  • to inform the audience on international and Russian documents in the field of human rights, on international organizations for human rights protection;

  • to demonstrate possibilities for human rights protection in Russia on the basis of international practice and documents;

  • to analyze the history and actual conditions of women's political movements in Russia.

Main Module Topics

Topic 1. Gender study of political developments.

Topic 2. Feministic criticism of conventional political science.

Topic 3. Women's rights within the human rights system. International and national documents concerning human rights/women's rights.

Topic 4. Russian State's policies towards women.

Topic 5. Policy of equal rights and equal opportunities (example of USA).

MODULE IV. GENDER AND SOCIAL POLICY

Course duration: 12 hours

Control over teaching results: those passing the course shall take active part in collective studies, work with the teacher who is developing the topic individually, timely produce an essay.

Module objectives:

  • to prepare the audience for working out independent blocks or separate topics on gender analysis of social policy;

  • to find out to what extent the conflict between social rights and market values might be represented in the gender expert examination of social policy;

  • to trace changes in the Russian social policy of Soviet and post-Soviet periods within a comparative analysis with the state of prosperity's structure;

  • to examine social consequences caused by reforms in Russian systems of health service, education, and social security;

  • to analyze the definitive features of men and women's conditions in the employment sphere and in the labour market, as well as the provision of pensions for different socio-demographic groups of the population.

Main Module Topics

Topic 1. Social policy. Problem of the target and tasks formulation: the essence and peculiar features.

Topic 2. Ideologies defining modern social policies of industrial nations: the place and role of feminism within this context.

Topic 3. Main orientations of the social policy. Health service reform and the state of women's health.

Topic 4. Gender structure of employment. Modern labour market of Russia.

Topic 5. Pensions for men and women (social reforms in the provision of pensions in Russia).

Topic 6. Gender aspects of investment in human capital.

MODULE V. FEMINIST ORIENTATION IN SOCIOLOGY

Control over teaching results: those passing the course should attend all the lectures, answer questions, and be active at seminar studies.

Module objectives:

  • to examine conceptions of socio-sexual relations in classical sociological theories, acquaint the audience with main orientations of feministic criticism of sociological theories;

  • to discuss the progress of feminist methodology in sociology;

  • to display different attitudes towards the family institution in different orientations of feminism;

  • to acquaint the audience with gender approach application, e.g. to the sociology of family.

Main Module Topics

Topic 1. Classical sociological theories on the division of men and women's roles.

Topic 2. Evolution of the feministic orientation in sociology. Criticism of functionalism, application of the Marxist theory and symbolistical inter-actionism. From women's studies to gender studies.

Topic 3. Stratification by sex. Women's standing in the society: studies described in Russian literature.

Topic 4. Socialization as a source for constructing femininities and masculinities. Re-socialization.

Topic 5. Views of the family institution in different orientations of feminism. 20 century.

Topic 6. Evolution of the feministic sociology of family. Gender approach in studies of family.

MODULE VI. GENDER APPROACH IN THE HUMANITIES

Module objectives:

  • to demonstrate opportunities provided by application of gender methodology in the humanities;

  • to consider the scope of problems, methods, and conceptions of most important orientations in gender history as a component part of inter-disciplinary gender studies;

  • to display how gender analysis application makes it possible to change the general conception of history and construct new explanatory models of socio-historical development;

  • to present a methodological basis for studies of gender aspects in the field of language and analyze feministic linguistics and masculinity studies;

  • to consider reflection of gender stereo-types in language;

  • to give an analysis of specific gender conditions in modern Russian arts.

  • to trace the cultural and historical evolution of the "woman-painter" phenomenon as a 20th century phenomenon and point out peculiar features of its appearance on the Russian ground;

  • to prepare the audience for gender approach application when working out independent blocks or separate topics on the humanities problems;

  • to demonstrate the possibility of employing various auxiliary materials in teaching, including film and video-tapes, as well as the Internet.
